The Tyler Big Band has existed, in one form or another, for more than 50 years. It continues today more musically adept and up-to-date than at any other time in its venerable life. The Band is made up of 18 members -- 5 saxophones, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 4 rhythm, and a vocalist.

The TBB is grounded in the musical genre which was usual and abundant in the era in which “big bands” originated, developed, and became the dominant musical force in radio, theaters, movies, dance halls, and eventually, television. Today it is still in widespread use in TV commercials and many movies. Noted musical analysts consider it an art form in itself.
TBB’s repertoire is extensive. A wide variety of musical styles includes swing, ballads, Latin, blues, and waltzes. Special care is given to danceable tempos. Most of the tunes are from that “golden age” of Big Bands, and many have been updated so as to reflect the passage of time. A new feature is the addition of a female vocalist, who has been a huge hit at all engagements.
You can expect to hear tunes associated with Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey, Jimmie Dorsey, and others. The band has recorded five albums, which are available.
The Tyler Big Band has been playing this kind of music for more than 30 years. Have a look at Dr. Bob Rossman, a local Dermatologist, who has been the lead trumpeter of the band for its entire life. He is typical of the backgrounds of a large majority of the 17 players (plus a girl singer) -- who is a Physical Therapist originally from the Philippine Islands, for heaven’s sake! Actually, there are also four male vocalists who join the girl singer in a variety of songs.
Backgrounds of the players are wide and varied. Christy Carlisle is one of two public school band directors in the membership. Also included are three Doctors, three engineers, a piano tuner, a police officer. a CPA, and a few retirees. Whatever their “day gig”, you can rest assured that at rehearsals and performances their entire concentration is on the music! Indeed, the caliber of the music is such that one might not be able to distinguish it from that of a highly touted professional group of national repute.
Music by the Tyler Big Band is artfully varied to suit the many moods and wishes of dancers AND listeners. The Tyler Big Band makes very sure that, whatever the type of big band music, it is performing the music authentically and excellently.
